The Atlas Taboak is “the most American VW ever” according to VW’s presentation at the New York International Auto Show yesterday.Without a production plan, or a clearly defined end game, VW is putting out feelers for a US built midsize pickup truck. Most likely to compete with Honda’s Ridgeline, the Atlas Tanoak will utilize VW’s 4Motion all wheel drive system and be built on the Atlas’s platform.With what appears to be a single cab/bed configuration and a crossover platform the Atlas Tonaok will not likely take sales away from off-road ready Chevy ZR2 or Tacoma TRD Pro, but may be a good option for those who once purchase the Subaru Baja (let’s hope Subi brings back that micro-truck to compete).The Atlas Tonaok is a cool concept, but I really think if VW wants to compete in the US truck market they should just bring the Amarok state side, a true 4WD diesel manual transmission pickup truck is just what the US wants (or at least it’s what I’d like to see).
